what do you feel about NFTs?

Unfortunately it seems like people will always find new ways to scam/be scammed.

the new Bat-Man was AMAZING

Yeah, I really liked it! Right up there with the Nolan films for me... The main thing I liked about it was how small and insular it was, a very meticulously planned detective Batman story, very focused and engaging like a good standalone graphic novel! Probably my favourite version of most of the elements in any on-screen live action Batman so far.

I do wonder how rewatchable it will be over time though since the sprawling "bigger picture" moving parts give the Nolan trilogy a continual sense of building momentum that makes them very easy to watch again and again whereas this one is so single minded in its scope that it might become more of a "go back and watch it every now and then to remember how good it actually is" type movie... but to be fair that'll probably speak more to any sequels and additonal material they make to further this story and universe rather than this film on it's own merits!

Honestly though, how good would this version be if it was a Netflix style bingeable mini series split into hour long-ish chunks... I am SO tired of the "movie" format in general and would prefer serialised story telling in the majority of cases!

NUCLEAR WAR!?

On the dance floor?

I love wwdits too

I stopped myself binging through the 3rd season (like I did with the 2nd when it came out) so I've only seen the first 2 episodes so far. The new series of Toast Of London (now Toast Of Tinseltown) is also all on the BBC iPlayer currently, so I'm trying to ration out the episodes of both shows to savour the Matt Berry fix as long as possible. (Other What We Do In The Shadows actors make appearances in that show this season too!)

happy new years xx

Likewise! Lots of stuff to do this year, no time to wait! :)

pod cast suggestions?

Well it depends what you're into honestly. The most important thing when it comes to Podcasts (and radio too I'd say) is that you like the presenters or presenting style enough to keep listening. No matter how interesting or entertaining a subject is if a host is grating or the sound quality is bad or regularly changes that is unbearable for me!

Some of my favourites are: The Album Years (Steven Wilson's podcast), The Infinite Monkey Cage, Science(ish), RHLSTP, Taskmaster The Podcast, The LOST Boys, Bad People (I started listening whilst doing research for the new Vampyrouss album actually), The Weekly Planet (for all my pop culture news since I barely care to keep up otherwise) and my favourite show that I long for the most between episodes is hands down Sonic The Comic The Podcast. As you can see most of those are very specific niche interests so it's hard to suggest any that have universal appeal...

Music-wise aside from the aforementioned Album Years I have listened to some music production podcasts in the past and that's about it... I tend to go to YouTube for any music information needs and entertainment instead honestly. What you could do is search for the topic you're interested in and download a couple episodes from various shows and weed out the ones you dislike or if someone you are familiar with has a podcast try listening to that as a stepping on point.

What is the highest number u can count to?

lolz. As farcical as the question is I am actually really bad at maths and anything number related. If you give me a 4 or more long string of numbers to remember I will instantly struggle to recall them correctly...

I almost certainly have either dyscalculia or maths anxiety, most likely the latter as I can usually understand quite complex numerical ideas if I read it or it is explained to me but I stuggle to retain it or take it out of that singular context and would have to entirely refresh my memory of it in the future if called upon so it's not like an educational brick wall for me but a severe recollection malfunction! :P

Obviously the more you do something the easier it is though, so anything related to music (as in bars/measures/time signature relationships etc) is instinctual to recall at this point.

least favourite opeth album

My least favourites are Still Life (was always my least favourite release at the time when I got into the band) and then Ghost Reveries and Watershed took its place when they came out.

Still Life is very much a guitarists dream of an album that often loses itself in it's own "superior" musicality to the detriment of the actual songs as a whole and that's why I never connected with it as much as the albums before and after.

I feel like the vast majority of heavy moments on the latter 2 albums mentioned are the most uninteresting material the band ever created, although there are some iconic moments throughout of course. But on the proggier experimental side of those two releases I absoloutely love the creative and interesting soundscapes and there is absolutely some of their best material ever written within them which to me makes the by the numbers heavy sections stick out more unfavourably, but that's just me!

They were 1000% right to move into a new direction from there on out where they focused on their own musical interests without having to force in "heavy parts" for the sake of appeasing a portion of their fans!

when did you learn to play music

Really quite recently compared to others! I tried to learn guitar/bass a few times over the years as a child/teen but never got far at all. Same with keyboards, we always had one around but I never learnt how to play other than a few little melodies...

It wasn't until 2009/2010 when I started learning bass, keyboards and a little guitar. I basically just learnt what I needed to write music. I had already been producing music with all my bands and projects for half a decade by that point so technically I knew a lot about it but actually playing the instruments is very different!

I'd say I didn't really start getting better at bass until I joined The Dead Betas in 2013 and we were rehearsing a few times a week and playing loads of shows so it was a huge pressure that really helped me improve "on the job" as they say!

I'm still not great at any of it to be honest but I do have a huge passion and hunger for knowledge about all things music related, so I think that counts for a lot. If you want to learn something it is much easier if you are really engaged with the topic and can dig into it fully which also helps you stick with it when you suck at the beginning! :P

What lies in the shadow of the statue?

"Ille qui nos omnes servabit"

Morning or Evening person?

I have always been a morning person, I love walking with the sunrise through a dead ghost town before all the people and noise arise! But in the past handful of years I have taken to long late night walks which I also love, I can concentrate fully on what I'm listening to (podcasts or projects I'm working on) without any distraction and get some good ol' steps in. I guess I love early mornings and late at night, it's a shame about the long bit inbetween! :P

One thing I cannot stand is staying in bed after I'm awake, lie-ins are like torture for me. Unless it's staying in bed doing something like reading or watching a film or show or whatever... but just laying there awake, lounging in general, thinking about all the things I could be doing instead is the worst sort of torture for me!

any recent shows you're watching?

The latest series of What We Do In The Shadows! Also Taskmaster and the Marvel shows... can't think of much else... hopefully the new series of Inside No. 9 isn't too far off!

Oooh, I haven't gotten to the new Dexter yet... I feel like I need to rewatch the last season first as a quick recap and to be honest that is putting me off a LOT! :P

hi what DAW do you use?

Currently: Cubase 11.

Back in 2003/4 I started out without a DAW (somehow) using "Windows Sound Recorder", a tape cassette player and a "Playstation2" for the first Vampyrouss demo!

From there I started using Cool Edit Pro until 2010/2011.

I then switched to Ableton Live briefly (which was a massive improvement in itself!).

Then I finally went to Pro Tools in 2013 which I was super happy with and would still be using now, however, after holding off on the newer version for a while I switched over this year (2021) and it was not fun at all...

So for the new Vampyrouss album demos I tried out Cakewalk which I would strongly suggest to anyone who is avoiding the "Big 3", it was pretty good and I might still go back to it for a few things specifically but I eventually settled on Cubase which I had played around with before and never liked but this newer version is very good and useable!

I'd totally go back to Pro Tools if they didn't screw with it so much as it was my favourite to navigate and use most effectively, but ah well. All technology changes over time and it seemingly is always for the worse!

Will you do another Camel cover?

I love how much people enjoy the bass covers (notably the Camel video) I'm definitely up for more bass covers just super busy working on original material at the moment!

It actually takes a fair bit of work to record and edit the videos and the music not to mention the irritating and constantly changing YouTube copyright type stuff which is always a hindrance...

But I'll definitely get back on it once things quieten down a bit!

what is your favorite song?

I'm not sure if this is in general or relating to stuff I've been involved in creating... if the latter then it would be as so for the main works:

My Passion Predator or Observations for Vampyrouss

Siren or Idiocracy for The Dead Betas

Voyeur or viral for Diabolous Nightbreed

In terms of other non-Maars related music... I'm really more of an album person... I know other people that would obsessively play the same song over and over on repeat but I've never really done that (aside from when learning a song etc...) but I'd happily listen to a full album any time even if I only really LOVED a handful of the songs and the rest were just alright or whatever, so I guess a singular song for me is only as good as the context in which I'm experiencing it? Something like that!
